The steel contains a unique blend of tungsten, molybdenum, cobalt, and vanadium, which enhances its hardness, red hardness, and overall durability, making it suitable for high-speed and high-temperature applications. ESR/M42 1.3247 High Speed Tool Steel Heat Treatment Process:

  1. Annealing

    • Annealed Hardness (HB): 269
      The annealing process softens the M42 steel, reduces internal stresses, and improves machinability. The hardness after annealing is 269 HB.

  2. Hardening

    • Hardening Temperature: 1170-1190°C
      The steel is heated to 1170-1190°C and held for a period to ensure uniform heating throughout. This process enhances the steel's hardness and wear resistance.

  3. Tempering

    • Tempering Temperature: 550°C
      During tempering, M42 steel is heated to 550°C, which helps reduce brittleness while maintaining a balance between hardness and toughness.

  4. Tempered Hardness (HRC): 65-68 HRC
    After tempering, the hardness of M42 steel ranges from 65-68 HRC, providing excellent wear resistance and high-temperature performance, making it suitable for high-load and high-speed cutting applications.
