P20 Steel Heat Treatment Summary

  • Stress Relieving: After rough machining, heat to 500-550°C, hold for 2 hours, then furnace cool slowly.

  • Annealing: Heat to 720-750°C, hold time depends on thickness, cool slowly in furnace to 600°C, then air cool. Hardness ≤ 235 HB for easier machining.

  • Quenching: Preheat at 500-600°C, austenitize at 880°C for 30 minutes, then quench in oil or gas. Prevent decarburization.

  • Tempering: Typically temper above 250°C, temper twice, holding at least 2 hours each time, cool to room temperature between tempers.
