SKD61 steel is classified as a hot work tool steel under the JIS G4404 standard. As a high-chromium alloy tool steel, SKD61 offers excellent hardness and wear resistance even at elevated temperatures after heat treatment. Its superior machinability and polishability make it an ideal choice for manufacturing high-precision molds with long service life.
Typically, SKD61 steel is supplied in an annealed condition, featuring a hardness below 229 HBW, which facilitates easier machining and processing before final heat treatment.

Ac3: 870°C
Ms: 270°C
Heat Treatment Temperatures and Processes
Annealing: 820-870°C, furnace cooling, hardness ≤229 HBW
Quenching: 1020-1050°C, oil or air quench, hardness after quenching 56-58 HRC
Tempering: 560-580°C, double tempering, hardness 50-55 HRC
Cryogenic Treatment
Immediately after quenching, deep cool at -70 to -80°C for 3-4 hours, then temper
Increases hardness by 1-3 HRC and improves dimensional stability
Risk of cracking for complex or large parts during cryogenic treatment
Nitriding Treatment
Forms a hardened surface layer with high hardness (~70 HRC) and some corrosion resistance after nitriding
