AISI 420 / S42000 - Versatile Martensitic Stainless Steel for Industrial Use

AISI 420 (S42000) is one of the earliest high-chromium martensitic stainless steels, offering an exceptional balance of cost, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. With a higher carbon content than typical stainless grades, it delivers increased hardness and strength. Compared to AISI 410, AISI 420 can be viewed as its high-carbon counterpart-retaining magnetic properties while providing superior durability in mildly corrosive environments.

Thanks to its stable mechanical properties and excellent polishability, AISI 420 is widely used in precision machinery components, bearings, electrical equipment, instruments, transportation tools, and household appliances. It is particularly well suited for parts exposed to atmospheric conditions, humidity, water, and oxidizing acids, making it the ideal choice where cost-effectiveness and reliable performance must go hand in hand.

AISI 420 / S42000 Steel Heat Treatment Summary

  • Subcritical Annealing

    • 675-760 °C, hold as needed

    • Resulting hardness: 94-97 HRB

  • Recrystallization Annealing

    • Heat to 830-850 °C, hold until fully recrystallized

    • Furnace cool to 790 °C, then slow cool (15-20 °C/h) to 595 °C

    • Air cools to room temperature

    • Resulting hardness: 86-95 HRB

  • Isothermal Annealing

    • Heat to 830-850 °C, then hold 2 h at 705 °C

    • Air cools to room temperature

    • Resulting hardness: < 95 HRB

  • Quenching (Hardening)

    • Heat to 1000-1050 °C, then water or oil quench

    • Resulting hardness: 47-49 HRC

  • Tempering

    • 600-750 °C, fast cool to room temperature

    • Resulting hardness: 25-40 HRC

Photo1(Domestic). Carbon carbide size obviously appears big size.

Photo 2 (abroad), the carbide distribution is uneven, and the individual is large. Reason analysis: During the smelting process, the carbide can not be controlled well. In the late forging, although the forging ratio increases, it fails to make up for the defects of the smelting.

Photo3(ZhengDa=Zeicin) the modification of three technological processes of 1)EAF+LF+VD, 2) Special innovation smelting process of RS ESR, 3) transformation forging, so that it is obviously better than the imported ones. The carbide is small and uniform.
