AISI L6 Tool Steel, classified under the L-type in ASTM A681 for special purpose tool steels, is an oil-hardening alloy tool steel known for its excellent toughness. It is ideal for applications requiring a combination of hardness and toughness, such as tools, dies, and machine parts.
Due to its lower carbon content and relatively high nickel content, L6 tool steel offers better shock resistance compared to more highly alloyed tool steels, making it suitable for applications where increased toughness is preferred over wear resistance.
Otai Steel provides AISI L6 tool steel in various shapes and sizes, tailored to meet specific customer requirements.

L6 Tool Steel | 1.2714 | 55NiCrMoV7 | SKT4 - Heat Treatment
Hardening
Preheating: Heat L6 steel to 621-677°C (1150-1250°F), soak for 30 minutes per inch of thickness, plus 15 minutes for each additional inch.
Quenching: Quench in oil to 66-51°C (150-125°F).
Tempering
Temper immediately after quenching. Hold at 204°C (400°F) for 1 hour per inch of thickness (minimum 4 hours), then air cool.
For increased toughness, temper at higher temperatures between 232°C to 426°C (450 to 800°F).
Annealing
Heat to 760°C (1400°F), hold for 1 hour per inch of thickness, then cool slowly in the furnace to 538°C (1000°F), and continue cooling to room temperature.
For better machinability, hold at 760°C (1400°F) for 1 hour per inch, then cool slowly in the furnace, and air cool after 8 hours.
L6 steel should not be normalized due to its air-hardening properties.
