DIN 1.2738 Tool Steel, also known as AISI P20+Ni, is a pre-hardened plastic mold steel based on the German standard. It contains chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo) as its key alloying elements, which enhance its mechanical properties, making it superior to similar steel grades like 1.2311 and 1.2312.
This steel is widely recognized for its excellent processing properties, including outstanding polishing ability, good machinability, and wear resistance. It is primarily used in the production of plastic molds, although it is also applicable in other hot work mold applications.
The steel undergoes a special pre-hardening treatment, usually achieved through quenching and tempering heat treatment, which results in a hardness range of 280-320 HB. This makes it highly suitable for mold production, providing durability, high performance, and excellent surface quality in plastic molding applications.
