Heat Treatment Process for M42 / 1.3247 Spray Forming Powder Metallurgy HSS

  1. Annealing
    Slowly heat the steel to 850-900°C and hold for 2-4 hours. Then furnace cool to below 600°C, followed by air cooling.
    This process achieves an annealed hardness of approximately 269 HB, ensuring good machinability before hardening.

  2. Hardening (Quenching)
    Heat to the austenitizing temperature of 1170-1190°C and hold for a suitable time based on section size.
    Quench rapidly in oil, salt bath, or vacuum gas to obtain optimal hardness and a refined microstructure.

  3. Tempering
    Temper immediately after quenching to relieve internal stresses and enhance toughness.
    Recommended tempering temperature range is 540-600°C.
    Double or triple tempering is advised for optimal performance.

After tempering, the hardness typically reaches 65-68 HRC, depending on the exact heat treatment parameters and material section.
