Heat Treatment Process for M42 / 1.3247 Spray Forming Powder Metallurgy HSS

  1. Annealing

Slowly heat the steel to 850-900°C and hold for 2-4 hours.
Then allow the furnace to cool slowly to below 600°C, followed by air cooling.

This process results in an annealed hardness of approximately 269 HB, providing excellent machinability before hardening.

  2. Hardening (Quenching)

Preheat the material in stages:  First to 450-500°C   ,Then to 850-900°C

Subsequently, heat to the austenitizing temperature of 1170-1190°C and hold for a time appropriate to the section size.
Quench rapidly in oil, salt bath, or vacuum gas quenching to achieve a fine, uniform microstructure and optimal hardness.

  3. Tempering

Temper the steel immediately after quenching to relieve internal stresses and improve toughness.
The recommended tempering temperature range is 540-600°C.
Perform double or triple tempering to achieve the best balance of hardness and toughness.

After tempering, the typical hardness reaches 65-68 HRC, depending on the exact heat treatment parameters and the section size.

Item Value
Annealed Hardness 269HB
Hardening Temperature 1170 - 1190ºC
Tempering Temperature 540 - 600ºC
Tempering Hardness 61 - 64HRC
