ASTM T5 Tool Steel is a tungsten-based high-speed steel that falls under the ASTM A600 standard, alongside other tool steels like T1, T2, and T4. As part of the T group, AISI T5 steel contains cobalt in the range of 7.0-9.5%, which enhances its high-temperature performance, toughness, and cutting ability. Compared to ASTM T4 Steel, T5 Tool Steel offers improved cutting performance and better resistance to heat, making it a popular choice for cutting tools, turning tools, and other high-performance applications. This combination of qualities makes T5 Tool Steel ideal for demanding machining tasks requiring durability, precision, and excellent wear resistance at elevated temperatures.

ASTM T5 Tool Steel | 1.3265 | S18-1-2-10 | SKH4 - Heat Treatment
Annealing
Heat to: 850°C (220°C per hour)
Hold for: 1 hour per inch of thickness (min 2 hours)
Cool: Slowly in furnace or air
Hardness: Max 255 HB
Stress Relieving
Heat to: 600-650°C
Hold for: 1 hour
Cool: Air cool
Purpose: Remove machining stresses and reduce distortion.
Hardening
Preheat: 820-870°C
Heat to: 1250°C
Quench: In warm oil, then air cool
Tempering
Temperature: 550-590°C
Purpose: Temper to achieve the desired hardness.
This simplified heat treatment process ensures ASTM T5 Tool Steel achieves optimal hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.
