ASTM/AISI T2 High Speed Steel is a Tungsten-based tool steel defined under the ASTM A600 standard, which covers both tungsten-type (T-series) and molybdenum-type (M-series) high-speed steels primarily used in tool fabrication. As one of the designated grades, T2 steel offers a balanced combination of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability during heat treatment.
T2 is an air-hardening medium alloy tool steel, positioned between high carbon chromium steels and oil-hardening tool steels in terms of wear resistance. It provides moderate red hardness, good grindability, and minimal distortion after quenching, making it ideal for tools requiring sharp cutting edges and consistent heat resistance.

Anneal ASTM T2 steel at 788°C as the preheating temperature, then heat to the quenching temperature: 1191°C in a salt-bath furnace or 1204°C in a controlled atmosphere furnace. Hold at this temperature for 5 to 15 minutes. This process softens the steel and prepares it for hardening.
After soaking, quench the steel by air cooling. This ensures effective hardening while minimizing distortion.
Temper the steel at 522°C to achieve the desired hardness. After tempering, the hardness should reach or exceed Rockwell hardness HRC 60.
Annealing hardness: 235 HBS
Cold drawn hardness: 262 HBS
Hardness after tempering: ≥ HRC 60
